HVAC Profit Margin Guide

Profit margin shows how much of a selling price remains after the costs included in the calculation.

Gross vs. Net Margin

Gross margin follows the direct costs assigned to work. Net margin is what remains after operating expenses and other applicable costs.

Basic Formula

Profit margin = profit ÷ selling price × 100. A $1,000 sale with $700 of applicable costs leaves $300, or a 30% margin.

What Reduces Margin?

Callbacks, material overruns, discounts, poor estimates, overtime and unrecovered overhead can reduce the final result.

Practical Next Steps

Keep your information current, document assumptions, compare estimates with actual results, and update the process when costs or workflows change.
